Veterinarian jobs are responsible for the health of pets, animals in zoos, livestock, and other related instances. Veterinarians diagnose animal problems, immunize the animals against diseases, administer medication to animals, treat and disinfect wounds, and give their owners advice about their pet's behavior, feeding habits, and breeding. Most veterinarians work in private medical practices and mostly take care of small animals according to the American Medical Veterinary Association. A smaller percentage of private-practice veterinarians work only with large animals although they may also care for other types or sizes of animals.
A veterinarian must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and also must have a State license. There are 28 colleges in 26 states that meet the accreditation standards that are set by the Council on Education of The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Keen competition exists for those that wish to enter veterinary school since applicants have risen dramatically in the recent years. Most States also require their candidates to pass a State jurisprudence exam that cover the States regulations and laws.
In 2006, there were 62,000 individuals with jobs in veterinarian facilities with most employed with a solo or group practice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there is a projected increase of employment for the 2006 to 2016 decade. An increase of 35 percent will be much faster than the national average for all occupations and create a demand for qualified professionals and excellent opportunities offered by employers.
