Teller jobs are the most visible positions within a bank. They handle customer's needs through cashing checks, accepting deposits, loan payments, and processing withdrawals. Working with a specific amount of cash in their drawers they verify this amount with the head teller and disperse this cash throughout the day. The minimum educational requirements for bank teller jobs is at least a high school diploma although most have completed some college or even acquired a bachelor's degree. Business, accounting, or liberal arts degrees are a good foundation to begin with. On the job training is typical of teller careers with close supervision from a senior worker or a manager. Company policies and procedures will be reviewed and computer software related to banking.

In 2006 there were 608,000 bank tellers that were employed. The majority worked for commercial banks, saving institutions, or credit unions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is an expected 13 percent increase in teller employment to occur during 2006 to 2016. This projected rate of growth for jobs will be nearly as fast as the average for all occupations. Although automation will decrease the need workers, job prospects for teller jobs will be good due to the need to replace workers that transfer to other occupations. Individuals with college degrees, great interpersonal communication skills, and previous experience will have the best capability to attain employment with the employer of their choice.
