Medical transcriptionist jobs listen to recordings done by physicians and other medical professionals and turn those recordings into medical reports and other materials used for administrative purposes. They typically listen to the recordings through a headset and input the text through typing into a word processor or a personal computer. They produce a variety of documents including discharge summaries, physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, progress notes, diagnostic imaging studies, referral letters, and medical history reports.
Employers tend to look for job applicants that have completed postsecondary training through attending community colleges, vocational schools, and distance- learning centers. A 2-year associate degree or a 1-year certificate program that includes coursework in anatomy, legal issues, medical terminology, and legal issues relating to health care documentation, along with English would be very beneficial for medical transcriptionist jobs but are not required.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, transcriptionist employment is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations. A rate of 14 percent is expected for transcriptionist jobs through the 2006 to 2016 decade. An aging population will create a demand for more qualified professionals for a medical transcriptionist job. A high demand for information that can be shared easily amongst health care professionals will increase the need for more transcriptionists. Job prospects are expected to be very good especially for those that are certified. Hospitals will continue to employ a large percentage of transcriptionists but other non medical industries will have faster job growth.
