Most electrician jobs are found within the construction industry or through work with independent contractors. Electrician's jobs incorporate everything needed to prepare a facility, factory or residence for electricity hook-up, maintenance or repair. Many jobs in electrical start through a vocational school or apprenticeship program that can take up to five years to complete. State licensure is often required, and in order to become a master electrician, there is further certification and a minimum amount of experience required.

The typical electrician job involves the ability to read and follow blueprints in order to accurately understand the placement of circuit boards, outlets and other electrical equipment points. Electricians must follow the national, state and local building and electrical codes in order to maintain safety standards. While working with outlets, transformers and circuit breakers, electricians use drills, knives, wire strippers and more to get the job completed. An electrical job within a factory setting can be more labor intensive, including repair work on generators, motors, transformers, etc.

Careers electrical are within the maintenance or construction realm. Construction electricians prepare a building by installing wiring systems according to the blueprints. Depending on the size of the facility and layout, they may work with engineers and line installers in order to create the safest electrical design. Electrical maintenance jobs are the workers that come into a building after the electricity has been appropriately placed, and perform repairs on the existing equipment or do replacements as needed.

Electrical work is often union-friendly, through the National Electrical Contractor's Association local chapters or Internal Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
