Painter jobs apply paint to a variety of different surfaces and make sure that the job is carried out to their customer's wishes. The painting process may include stripping the surfaces of old paint to prepare for the new coat. Painters can specialize in different finishes that give extra flair to painter work adding to the decorative element of painting. Different structures may also need coat structures with applicants that increase their longevity. Working 40 hours or less, individuals with painters careers work long hours and must have physical dexterity to perform painting jobs at to the best of their ability, since the work is physically demanding.

Most painters gain their kills through on the job training working alongside a more experienced painter. Painting apprenticeships involve both formal training of 144 hours of class instruction and on the job training that lasts two to four years. Having at least a high school education or its equivalent is a significant amount of education for painter employment.

In 2006 there were 470,000 painters employed with the majority working with new construction, repair, remodeling, or restoration contractors. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is projected that an 11 percent increase will occur during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This rate of employment will be almost as fast as the national average for all occupations. Job prospects for these careers should be excellent for professionals that have the broadest skill sets. Job availability should out number the pool of applicants creating great opportunities.
