Pipe Fitter Jobs

Pipefitter jobs are responsible for repairing and installing many different types for residential and commercial pipe systems. Working in industrial and power plants, pipe fitter jobs complete the standard 40 hour work weeks maintaining pipe systems, with overtime work on evening or weekend shifts possible.

Although training can be gained through technical schools and community colleges, apprenticeship programs, if available offer the most complete education and on the job training for pipefitter employment. 144 hours of formal coursework combined with four to five years of on the job training will give workers the amount of experience that they will need. Also, applicants for apprenticeships must be at least 18 years of age and be able to complete tasks that will call for physical labor. No uniform licensing exists for pipefitter work but most States call for at least two to fiver years of experience to pass licensing examination.

With around 570,000 positions employed in 2006, pipefitters consisted of one of the largest construction occupations. Over half of these workers were employed with heating and air conditioning and repair contractors. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there will be little or no change in the employment rate of pipefitters. This rate will be almost equal to the employment rate of all occupations with new construction creating a demand for plumbers and related workers. Opportunities for jobs will be excellent as there will be a high demand for skilled professionals. Pipefitters with welding experience will have the best job opportunities.
