Plumbing jobs are much more than just installation or unclogging drains. Plumbing falls under the category of pipe layers, pipe fitters and steamfitters, and includes the installation, maintenance and repair of pipe systems in general. Plumber jobs can be found within companies or through independent contractors, and include work within commercial, public and residential locations.

Plumber's jobs concentrate on the installation, maintenance and repair of all the water, drainage and waste disposal systems within a facility. Plumber work includes installing appliances like water heaters and dishwashers, as well as fixtures like sinks, toilets, bathtubs and more. In any instance where plumbing needs to be unhooked or connected to anything, the plumber is able to do it safely and efficiently through specialized training.

The typical plumbing job can include work with many different types of materials, including plastic, copper and steel in the case of residential systems, or cast-iron pipes for municipal sewage systems. When working on a new house or commercial facility, plumbers must also be able to decipher blueprints for installation, and depending on the position, may need to create blueprints through specialized software. Plumbers may even work with electricians and other specialists to create the best plumbing plan within code and optimum efficiency.

Many plumbing apprenticeships and positions are protected by the union, through international, national and local chapters, including associations like the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada and National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors.
