Truck Driver Jobs

Truck driver jobs are responsible for transporting goods around the nation using interstates and highways. Delivering a diverse range of items, no other form of transportation can deliver the goods the same way. Before departing, jobs in truck driving require checking the different aspects of the truck to verify that they are functioning properly. The cargo is then checked to ensure that it is secured within or on top of the trailer. If any of the equipment is not working or missing it must be reported to the dispatcher.

A commercial driver's license (CDL) is required to drive large trucks, although gaining this special license does not guarantee employment. Many employers prefer that candidates for truck driving jobs be at least 22 years of age, be able to lift heavy objects, and have previous experience driving trucks for at least 3 to 5 years. A High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is the minimum education requirement for a truck driver job.

In 2006 there were 3.4 million truck drivers jobs with most being employed within a major metropolitan area. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic, there will be an increase of 8 percent during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This percentage will be close to the national average for all occupations. Job prospects for truck driver jobs will be favorable for individuals that have valid CDL's and good driving records with previous experience. Additional demand for jobs will be created from individuals that leave to pursue other careers or leave the work force, but as the economy gains strength there will be more truck driving job opportunities.
