State jobs are one of the largest employers in the economy because of the 8.0 million workers that are employed by State agencies in nearly every industry. The occupations and working conditions can vary by the size and location of the State or local government, but the standard of 40 hour work weeks in office environments. Exceptions for certain occupations, like firefighters, working 50 hour weeks do exist.
The minimum educational and training requirements for state employment vary by occupation, but generally most professional positions will require at least a bachelor's degree in a related field of study. A master's degree in public administration would be favorable for a city manager career, but many cities do not require a master's degree for that position but a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, finance, or a related field would suffice. Fire fighting jobs require at least a high school diploma with at least a high school education or its equivalent along with passing a civil service exam.
State jobs are expected to increase by 8 percent according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics during the 2006 to 2016. The majority of job growth will be from the State and local demand of public safety and health services. Although the lowering of State budgets will occur, the overall job growth is expected to be favorable. Additional opportunities for employment will be due to workers that shift to different careers or exit the work force entirely.
