Sanitation workers are responsible for removing waste from a variety of places including businesses, households, and other establishments. A potentially hazardous career because of exposure to harmful waste products, they must follow the proper safety policies for waste removal when loading, handling, and unloading the waste. Many have 40 hour work weeks but may also have to work overtime shifts. Sanitation worker jobs also require making sure that the vehicles are fueled and are properly operating and maintained through conducting routine safety checks. Records of safety checks as well as fuel and oil consumption also must be kept for service purposes. Sanitation workers also operate on assigned routes or areas where they collect waste from residential and commercial waste.
A high school education is the only formal education that is necessary to become a sanitation worker. Workers must be able to perform basic mathematics and have good physical strength and dexterity since there will be long working ours that may be tiring. Having good interpersonal communication skills is also a plus, since most of the labor will be completed as a part of a team.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected 11 percent increase in the sanitation employment through 2006 to 2016. This rate will be very close to the national average rate of employment for all occupations. Additional employment will be due to workers that leave the industry to work in different occupations and those that choose to leave the workforce entirely.
