Dental Assistants Jobs

Dental assistant jobs work under the supervision of dentists and support with their day to day work by performing a range of duties in the lab, office and even assisting with patient care. Cleaning medical equipment, preparing dental instruments, and accessing dental records are common tasks completed by persons with dental assistant careers. Most dental assistants jobs require 35 to 40 hour work weeks and variable or part time schedules. Depending on the employer, weekend and evening work may be necessary.

While many individuals learn their common duties and tasks through on the job experience dental assistant programs are offered by community and junior colleges among other education institutions. In 2006 there were 269 dental assisting training programs that are approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation within the American Dental Association. Programs like these include laboratory, classroom, and preclinical instruction on topics related to dental assisting skills. Some States require licensure or registration which could require passing a written or practical exam. Some schools offer 10 to 12 month programs that meet their states requirements while other states call for State-approved educational courses that can range from 4 to 12 hours. A few States allow for dental assistants to handle any task delegated to them.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that an increase of 29 percent from 2006 to 2016 will take place making dental assistant employment faster than the national employment average for all occupations. This demand for dental assistant jobs will be due to the increases in the population. Job prospects should be excellent from qualified professionals.
