Medical Transport Jobs

EMT positions are very critical to our society since they require individuals to respond quickly and safely where there is a need to transport sick, injured, or convalescent persons. EMT jobs also involves moving patients between different health facilities in non emergency situations because of conditions that may call for specialized doctors or equipment that only certain hospitals can provide. Emergency medical transportation workers do their job in all types of weather. They make sure patients are properly placed on gurney, lift them into ambulances and administer treatment until they arrive at the health care facility. Working anywhere from 45 to 60 hours a week, these types of jobs can be very stressful because of their extended on call periods in which they must be able to respond to emergencies for 24 hours a day.

A high school diploma is the minimum education necessary to enter a formal emergency medical program. There are three different levels of training for job seekers including EMT basic, EMT intermediate, and EMT paramedic, the most advanced level of training that takes 1 to 2 years to complete and may result in an associates degree. All 50 States require their EMT's to be complete a formal education program and successfully pass the NREMT for proper licensure. The NREMT certification must also be renewed every two years.

EMTs and paramedics held nearly 201,000 jobs in 2006 with most workers employed in larger metropolitan areas with private ambulance services. A smaller percentage worked for local government services such as fire departments, public ambulance services, and emergency medical services. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected increase of 19 percent to occur during 2006 to 2016. This rate of employment for EMT jobs will be faster than the national average for all occupations and will be due to the replacements to fill unpaid volunteers. A growing elderly population will also need more medical care, increasing the demand for qualified persons for medical transport jobs.
