Pharmacists Jobs

Pharmacist jobs distribute prescription drugs to individuals and advise them and health practitioners on selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects of the medicines. They ensure that the proper amount of medicine is used and also monitor the progress of the patients. Pharmacist work also includes compounding, which is the mixing of ingredients to form the actual medications. Working 40 hour work weeks is standard for full time pharmacists, with a smaller percentage working more than 50 hours a week.

The minimum educational requirement is a Pharm.D. degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy. After completion of at least two years of post secondary study, individuals can be admitted into a pharm d. program. There were 92 colleges and schools of pharmacy that were accredited to give degrees by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Almost 70% of Pharm. D programs require applicants to take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). After graduation there are a series of examinations that must be passed to become a licensed pharmacist which is required in all States before starting a career.

With nearly 243,000 pharmacist jobs in 2006, over half were employed by community pharmacies with a smaller percentage employed by hospitals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there is a projected increase of 22 percent to occur during 2006 to 2016 period. This increase in pharmacist careers will be faster than the national average for all occupations. Job prospects will be excellent for qualified professionals with great interpersonal communication skills.
