Radiation Therapist Jobs

Radiation therapist jobs are responsible for using linear accelerators to administer radiation treatment to their patients. These machines use external beam therapy which projects x rays at targeted cancer cells which can shrink and eliminate cancerous tumors. Guiding the patient through each of the steps in the process from the alignment of the machine over the tumor to the actual treatment in which they monitor the patient's physical condition. Records of the treatment are kept to examine the amount of radiation used, the patient's reactions, and the area treated. Working standard 40 hour work weeks, some jobs in radiation therapy may be required to be on call possibly working outside of their typical work schedule.

Radiation therapy jobs require a bachelor's degree, an associate degree, or a certificate in radiation therapy and in some State's proper licensure before becoming employed. Radiation therapy courses includes courses on human anatomy and physiology, pre-calculus, algebra, physics, writing, public speaking, computer science, and research methodology. In 2007 there were 123 radiation therapy programs accredited by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). As of 2007, there were 32 States that required radiation therapists to be licensed by a State Accrediting board. For this certification, applicants must pass the ARRT certification exam and complete an accredited radiation therapy program. Radiation therapists ARRT certification lasts for a year and must be renewed by paying annual dues, and satisfying continuing education requirements.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected increase in radiation therapist employment of 25 percent to occur during 2006 to 2016. This rate will be much faster than the national average for all occupations and stems from the increasing amount of older age groups that need more medical treatment creating great opportunities for radiation therapist jobs.
