Jobs in research attempt to advance the knowledge of life processes and things related to the medical research which could eventually become the basis for the development of new drugs, new vaccines, and treatment procedures. An individual with a research job involves studying biological systems to find the causes of particular diseases or other health problems.

A Ph. D in a biological science is the minimum education required by most employers. This will allow for research basic life processes or medical problems and to view and interpret the results of experiments. Research careers that administer drug or gene therapy to human must also be licensed physicians. Only after graduating from an accredited medical school, passing a formal licensing examination, and finishing 1 to 7 years of graduate medical study can individuals become licensed. They mostly work independently and must be great interpersonal communications since they must explain processes and or instructions to others in the laboratory.

In 2006, there were 92,000 jobs in research, with the majority of the concentration of employment within colleges and universities. A smaller percentage was employed in the scientific research and development services industry. Research employment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a significant increase of 20% over the 2006 to 2016 period. This rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations and will stem from the growth of biotechnology companies and expansion of research careers for specific diseases such as AIDS, cancer, and avian influenza.
