Housekeeping Jobs

Housekeeping jobs are responsible for performing a variety of cleaning duties for commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants, and private households. The hours for these types of positions can vary by industry but the majority of workers provide their assistance during the daytime for 40 hour work weeks.

The minimum educational requirements for jobs in housekeeping or most entry level cleaning jobs are at least a high school diploma. Workers should be able to perform basic mathematics and follow instructions from managers or supervisors. Once employed, a more experienced staff member will instruct the individual on how to perform routine cleaning jobs efficiently using a variety of cleaning agents and special equipment. Some cleaning supervisors and managers belong to the International Executive Housekeepers Association which offers two certification programs. Certified Executive Housekeeper (CEH) is offered to individuals that have completed high school and Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH) is offered to those who have a bachelor's degree.

In 2006, there were nearly 1.5 million housekeeper jobs, which about 29% of were employed within private households. Motels, hotels, and other traveler accommodations employed nearly the same percentage. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a significant increase in the rate of housekeeping careers during the 2006 to 2016 decade. Projected to grow by 14 percent for housekeeper jobs, this rate is faster than the national average for all occupations. A need to replace workers that transfer to other occupations will create a demand to fill housekeeping employment positions mostly within cleaning private households.
