Insurance Underwriter Jobs

Insurance underwriter jobs entail making decisions about the insurability of a client and under what terms that client is insurable. This job requires the worker to calculate the risk of insuring a client and determine who should receive insurance policies. Once an underwriter has established the risk of loss for a given client, they are then able to write a policy tailored to meet the client's needs and protect their company. In addition, they determine the appropriate amount of premium a client should pay for the type of insurance they have been issued. Insurance underwriting jobs involve extensive use of computers. Underwriters will use their company's computer software to analyze client information and establish the amount of risk involved. Underwriters use this information to decide if an insurance policy will be issued.

Underwriters are found in all four major types of insurance: property and casualty, life, health, and mortgage. While the type of insurance and the risk factors that need to be considered are very different for each category of insurance, the insurance underwriter jobs have the same job function. Underwriters generally work at 40 hours per week with little to no work during the evenings or weekends.

Insurance underwriting jobs do not require a specific educational background, but most employers choose to hire workers who have received a college degree; although, coursework in business and accounting is generally helpful. In addition, basic computer skills are required for the position.
