Custodian jobs perform a variety of cleaning duties such as cleaning floors, washing walls and glass, shampooing walls, and emptying trash cans. Custodian work also ensures proper that bathrooms are clean, lawns are mowed, and carpets are vacuumed. Although there have been improvements in cleaning services to boost productivity, these positions are still a very much labor intensive job.

Not much education is required for most entry level janitorial or custodian careers. Workers should be competent in being able perform basic arithmetic, speak English, and follow instructions. Most employers tend to have at least a high school diploma. Individuals seeking custodian employment should also possess great communication skills. As entry level workers they may gain more responsibilities, tasks, or duties, as they become more experienced. Paths for advancement include supervisor or managerial positions for qualified professionals. Workers may also be required to stretch, stand, and lift heavy objects so being in good physical condition will be favorable.

In 2006 there were 2.4 million janitorial and custodian jobs, which accounted for 57 percent of all building and cleaning workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, custodian employment is projected to increase faster than the national average for all occupations at 14 percent through 2006 to 2016. Job prospects are expected to arise from this growth in employment. Additional growth will come from the need to replace workers that leave the workforce entirely or transfer to other occupations. Opportunities from employers will be best for the qualified workers that have high school diplomas, previous experience, and strong interpersonal skills.
