Correctional Officers Jobs

Correctional jobs involve overseeing arrested individuals awaiting trial or who have been convicted and sentenced to jail, penitentiary, or reformatory time. Also known as detention officers, they watch over the offenders who populate the nation's jail and prison system by maintaining order through several different restrictions and regulations. They are also responsible for ensuring the proper working order of the facilities in which they perform their duty. This includes but is not limited to performing checks on the locking mechanisms, windows, and gates.

Order is maintained through supervision and inmate accountability to avoid any illicit activity from taking place. Searches of the inmate's cell to locate contraband or weapons are common tasks that corrections jobs involve.

Some facilities may call for higher security thus having more advanced technological ways to monitor and supervise the actions of inmates while possibly providing more safety for those that seek correctional employment. In many instances older institutions can pose more of a risk to correctional officers.

An understanding for the correctional jobs assignments are learned through on-the-job training since many institutions differ. In all cases a high school diploma or graduation equivalency degree and a minimum age of 18 years is required along with a record consisting of no prior felony convictions.
