Maritime jobs fall under the category of water transportation occupations, and are centered around work at sea. Marine jobs are generally regulated under the U.S. Coast Guard, and can include the transportation of passengers and/or cargo to locations regionally, nationally or globally. Jobs in marine range from deckhand jobs, which carry out the daily maintenance and operation of a vessel, to marine oilers, who keep the engine motors and parts running smoothly, to pilots, the marine workers that navigate the ship through tight spots and hazardous conditions.

Captain jobs are some of the best-known positions, and describe the worker that is in command of the ship. The captain is responsible for the overall operation of the marine craft, as well as the crew that usually includes deckhands, mates and pilots. Captains also need to follow any safety protocols set in place by the Coast Guard or ship owner, and supervisors the cargo movement. There is also a fair amount of paperwork in order to track the vessel’s voyage, as well as passenger and cargo traffic.

Due to the rigors of sea life and the demanding schedules, maritime positions generally pay more than other entry-level labor positions. In order to secure a water transportation job, with positions ranging from pipe welder jobs in the maintenance department to deckhands, a passion for the sea and good health is as important as a high school diploma. To work as an officer, engineer or higher, experience as a deckhand or a degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, among others, will help. There is required licensing by the U.S. Coast Guard for specialty positions, and these vary according to type of ship and the region in which the operator is working.
