Health safety jobs help prevent harm to workers, customers, and property. They also are trained to increase efficiency of workers by testing different safety aspects of the business and suggesting improvements.

Health & safety jobs can sometimes require individuals have at least a bachelors degree in safety, occupational health or a related field. Some employers may even require a master's degree, as these positions could call for additional functions and responsibilities that other positions with lower educational requirements may not. A portion of employers can also require for job seekers to have accreditations and certifications. In 2007 there were 45 health physics, industrial hygiene, and safety programs recognized by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Individuals seeking employment should have great interpersonal communication skills and be very organized.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, health and safety jobs were mostly found in the private sector. A 9 percent growth is projected in the decade between 2006 and 2016, which is close to the national average for all occupations. Job openings for health safety work will arise but additional openings will come from professionals that retire or relocate to other occupations.
