Waitress jobs are available at restaurants of any size. The typical waitress or waiter job exists to get food delivered accurately and on time to the restaurant's clientele. Most waiter waitress jobs do not require specialized training, unless it is through a high-end restaurant or chain with a certain style of food delivery. Due to the high volume of available work, waiter or waitress jobs are some of the most abundant. Although full-time positions are available, there is always work for those seeking part-time, seasonal and second jobs. Although the base pay is generally below minimum wage, waiters and waitresses are able to receive customer tips, generally 10-20 percent of the overall bill.

Another position within the industry includes waiter or waitress bartender jobs. These can be found at smaller restaurants with a lean bar staff, and the server pulls double duty, or at larger restaurants with such a large bar area that there are cocktail tables within. Generally, the waiter or waitress brings the drink order to the bartender, and depending on whether they are under age or not, they may need to rely on the bartender or general manager to serve the drinks.

Waitress hostess jobs include the dual role of seating and serving the patronage. Most high volume restaurants have a host or hostess stand, where greeters are poised to seat customers. Smaller restaurants will have the first available waiter or waitress seat customers, and either wait on them or more likely, send over another member of the wait staff. Exclusive host positions generally do not get tips in addition to base pay, unless the restaurant has a tip pooling system in place.
