Advertising sales jobs are responsible for selling advertising for newspapers and periodicals, radio and television, websites, telephone directories, and direct mail. Ad sales jobs are critical to the success of such businesses because they thrive on the revenue that is created from advertising. Media firms, including television and radio broadcasters, print and internet publishers and cable program distributors employ the majority of advertising sales workers.

Most larger companies tend to hire individuals with a college degree and proven experience for sales positions that involves meeting clients although a high school degree may be sufficient for some employers. Marketing, leadership, communication, business, and advertising are classes that will increase a person’s success with the position. Training takes places on the job formally and informally from more experienced sales managers who act as coaches while observing interactions and looking for ways to improve. 

Having 170,000 jobs in 2006, advertising sales careers are concentrated into three main industries. Newspaper, periodical, and directory publishers, advertising and related services, and radio and television broadcasting make up those industries. Employment for advertising sales jobs can be found around the country but larger metropolitan areas have the highest concentration of jobs in radio and television. Advertising employment is projected to increase by 20 percent in the decade from 2006 to 2016 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Growing faster than the average for all occupations, qualified professionals will be needed to advertise to the growing Hispanic occupation. Good opportunities for advertising sales job employment are expected.
