Human services jobs are a professional that helps individuals with improving their lives. These professionals assist people with coping with personal or family problems, relationship issues, and even dealing with a disability or life threatening disease. Typically working from an office or residential facility, a human services position may require local travel to visit different clients, attend meeting, or meet service clients. Full time workers usually work 40 hour work weeks but sometimes working weekends or evening may be necessary to meet the needs of the client.

A bachelor's degree in social work is the basic requirement for a person seeking a human services job and the most common degree. Majors in sociology, psychology, and other related educational fields may also meet the requirements for entry level human services positions, specifically in smaller community agencies. For jobs that require more clinical work and are in more health oriented settings, a master's degree in social work would be necessary for consideration. Positions that are focused on supervision, administration or staff training will call for an advanced degree such as a master's in social services policy or administration. Generally positions at colleges and universities will appoint those who have completed their Ph. D.

Human services employment is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations from 2006 to 2016. An increase of 22 percent in human services jobs will be attributed to the aging baby boom generation that will create a demand for jobs in human services.
