Dispatcher jobs are important positions that are responsible for scheduling workers and vehicles. They keep logs, records, and schedules of inbound calls from the vehicles that they control and monitor. Normally, reports are created to detail all activities dispatch workers complete for their assigned areas or territories in which they coordinate the movement of trucks and freight across the nation. Directing the pickup and delivery activities, receiving requests from customers, combining freight orders into one delivery, drawing up the best routes for pickup and delivery schedules, and assigning trucks and drivers are all common tasks of dispatcher careers.

Sometimes dispatchers can have a large quantity of calls at a very short interval which can potentially cause stress for the workers. Handling multiple tasks at once and sitting for long periods of time using telephones, computers, and two-way radios they have to spend the majority of their time observing the movement of the vehicles. Dispatcher work allows for individuals to develop the skills necessary on the job from other more experienced workers, managers or supervisors. Employers may also have formal training programs for a dispatcher job. A high school diploma is usually sufficient for this type of entry level position but many states may require an individual to possess certain types of training or certifications.

Dispatcher jobs are projected to grow moderately through the 2006-16 decade. Economic expansion is expected to trigger dispatcher employment growth. Many job prospects will be created from individuals that make transitions into other fields of work and whose positions will need to be replaced.
