District Photo was founded in 1949 as a small black & white photo lab.
In the next 40 years, DPI built a large wholesale photofinishing lab serving mid-Atlantic retailers and a national mail order film developing business. In 1998, the DPI family acquired our largest mail order competitor which also brought the Harrier facility in the UK.
In 1992, DPI became the only lab to which Eastman Kodak outsourced photo finishing services.
Through the last 9 years, DPI transitioned from an analog lab to a state-of-the-art digital lab, printing & shipping millions of photos worldwide each day.
In 2001, the DPI family of companies acquired Snapfish, one of the top online photo services. In 2005, District sold Snapfish to Hewlett Packard.
In 2004, DPI started expanding into the digital custom products market in a joint venture with PhotoThis. In 2006, ink based equipment was added at District Photo. In 2007, the DPI family fully acquired PhotoThis.
Today, District Photo is the largest direct-to-consumer photo fulfillment operation in the world.
