Automotive Jobs

The automotive industry is one that has changed considerably over the last few decades. The introduction of computer car parts and electronic systems to install, set and maintain has changed the whole industry. Automotive jobs have now become less handy work and more diagnostic, and auto mechanics are increasingly known as service technicians.

The industry is still so huge that there are a large variety of jobs in automotive. A typical automotive job can include anything from the service advisor that greets the customers and writes up the trouble ticket to the service technician that diagnoses the problem to the billing department that settles the payment. Within a larger auto shop, automotive technician jobs are drilled even further down by specialty: transmission technicians, automotive air-conditioning repairers and brake repairers, among others.

In order to get into the automotive industry, a high school diploma or degree for a two-year or technical school is required. Many in the automotive industry excel through training programs like the high school based Automotive Youth Education Services (AYES) and certification from the industry standard National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). This is an industry where on-the-job training often means advancement throughout the company.
