Retail Manager Jobs

Retail manager jobs direct the focus of sales teams including cashiers, customer service representatives, and stock clerks. They are responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new employees and make sure that customers are receiving the proper amount of customer service for their transactions. In larger establishments, retail manager jobs tend to have more defining roles and responsibilities versus a retail manager that works in a smaller business. Retail manager careers also involve working standard 40 hour work weeks, although their hours for working vary greatly.

The minimum educational requirements vary widely but the majority of professionals have at least an associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field such as business, management, or liberal arts. Having previous proven sales experience would be beneficial, as employers tend to hire workers these individuals that also have a good aptitude for computers, exceptional interpersonal communication skills, as well as managerial experience.

In 2006, there were around 2 million retail manager workers employed with a large percent of workers employed in the retail sector with a smaller percentage self employed.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected employment increase of 4 percent during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This less than favorable outlook for retail manager jobs reflects the limited growth that is projected for the industry. Internet sales will continue to grow placing strain on the retail industry. Prospective job seekers that have solid resumes with previous experience will have the best opportunities for employment as a majority of the job openings will be created from the need to replace workers that change careers or exit the work force entirely.
