Surgical Technologists Jobs

Surgical technologist jobs provide assistance with surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Preparing an operating room, assembling non sterile equipment, and disinfecting incision sites are commonly completed tasks for surgical technologists, although specific tasks may vary by employer. Passing instruments and other supplies to surgeons, preparing specimens for lab analysis and operating diagnostic equipment are also under their responsibility. Surgical technologist careers may work nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to working standard 40 hour work weeks.

Surgical technology jobs require an associate degree, diploma, or a certificate once completing a training program that lasts 9 to 24 months. The military, hospitals, universities, vocational schools, and junior and community colleges all offer formal training programs for surgical technologist jobs. In 2006, there were 400 accredited training programs that were recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Employers also tend to favor hiring high school graduates that have the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) designation after completion of a CAAHEP accredited program and passing a national certification examination. This certification must be renewed every 4 years in order to maintain. To qualify they must either complete an accredited training program, finish a 2 year hospital training on the go program, or acquire 7 years of experience by working in the field.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is projected that a 24 percent increase in surgical technologist jobs during 2006 to 2016. This rate will be much faster than the national average for all occupations and will be due to the rising older population, who will generally need more surgical operations. Job prospects are expected to excellent for certified professionals.
